About

Traveling Mercy facilitates international experiences for those who have been historically excluded from international travel. We award grants to members of marginalized communities for international trips and provide additional resources to facilitate international travel, including advice, passport assistance, and in-kind donations. We do this by partnering with other organizations in the international travel space.

Mission

Our mission is to facilitate international experiences for historically marginalized people through economic resources and information. We believe travel is a necessity and not a luxury and should therefore be inclusive. Our mission is rooted in the benefits that marginalized groups’ access to travel results in, such as increased self-awareness, opportunity, and learning, as well as contributing to societal justice and peace.

History

Traveling Mercy is a 501(c)(3) organization that facilitates international experiences for historically marginalized people. It was founded in 2017 by Alexis Coleman. Alexis was working at the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam and reflected on the many opportunities and learning that traveling afforded her. She took her first trip to Curaçao with her mother and sister at the age of 10. In the increasingly globalized world, it is important not to forget about the historically marginalized. Traveling Mercy helps to foster self-awareness, interconnection, and peace through facilitating international experiences for historically marginalized groups.

Who are the historically marginalized? Well, often times we pigeon-hole ourselves into focusing on one group and we miss several others. Traveling Mercy does not focus on one group, or one form of marginalization. Through providing international experiences for people of color, women, the elderly, those of low socio-economic status, LGBTQ, formerly incarcerated, disabled and religious minorities, etc., Traveling Mercy believes we can leave the world better than we found it.

Through annual grants, Traveling Mercy partners with other organizations that plan and schedule trips. We fund raise to provide knowledge and resources that make international experiences possible for those who do not have access.
